NASAL STRIPS

How to use nasal strips for snoring concerns in India

Fact Checked

People ask me all the time, how does a nasal strip actually help with snoring? Here is the honest answer. Most of the time the strip is not the problem. How you put it on is.

Two things trip people up. First, they peel it off and stick it back on again and again, which kills the glue. Second, they do not clean their nose first. Many of us in India have oily skin, and with our heat and humidity, oil and sweat sit on the nose all day. If you do not wipe it with an alcohol pad before you apply, the strip will not hold. And a strip on your pillow cannot help you.

Last Saturday I put this to the test the hard way. I ran 19 km in Ahmedabad, just over two hours in the heat. Before the run I cleaned my nose with an alcohol pad and put on an Awesome Nasal Strip. It stayed on the whole way, through all that sweat. If a strip holds through that, holding through a calm night of sleep is the easy part.

My long run in Ahmedabad heat. Two hours and seventeen minutes, average heart rate 167. Cleaned my nose with an alcohol pad first, and the strip stayed on the whole way.

01. Quick answer: when nasal strips can help

What they do

A nasal strip is a bendy band with tape on the back. It sits across the outside of your nose and gently lifts the sidewalls of your nostrils open. That widens the narrowest part of your nose, the nasal valve, so air moves more freely. When your snoring starts in the nose, more airflow means less of the turbulence that makes the sound.

What they do not do

They do not help snoring that starts in your throat, and they do not treat sleep apnea. They are drug-free and they do not go inside your nose. Think of them as help for nasal snoring, not a switch that turns off every snore.

The routine

02. Step-by-step: correct placement in under 2 minutes

01
Clean and dry your nose. Wash the bridge of your nose, pat it dry, then wipe it with an alcohol pad. This is the step most people skip, and with oily skin in Indian heat it is the one that matters most. Wait about a minute so the skin is fully dry.
02
Find the right spot. Place the strip across the soft flare of your nose, where the nostrils meet the bridge. Not on the tip. Not up on the hard bone.
03
Press and hold. Press firmly for five full seconds on each side. Sustained pressure sets the glue. A quick pat is why strips lift at 2am.
04
Time it right. Put it on right before bed, on clean dry skin, after your face is washed and any skincare has dried. Do not apply over moisturiser or oil.

Troubleshooting

03. If it still does not feel right: 5 common mistakes

1

Placing it too high or too low

Too high sits on the bone, too low sits on the tip. Neither can pull the nasal valve open. Aim for the soft flare.

2

Applying on damp or oily skin

This is the number-one reason strips slip in India. Oil and sweat break the bond. An alcohol pad first fixes it.

3

Wrong size or tension for your nose

A strip that is too small or too stiff for your nose will not lift well or stay put. Match the strip to your nose.

4

Peeling and re-sticking it

Every time you lift and replace a strip, the glue gets weaker. Get the placement right on the first try and leave it.

5

Expecting instant, total silence

A strip reduces nasal snoring. It does not switch off every snore on night one. Give it a fair run.

Give it a fair test

04. How long to test before you judge results

The 3-night check

Give it three nights with clean prep and correct placement before you decide anything. One night is not a fair test, and your first night is often the night you fuss with it the most.

The 7-night check

Run it seven nights in a row. Consistency is where the real pattern shows up. If you track your sleep on a watch, watch the trend over the week, not one reading.

Safety first

05. Who should be cautious and speak to a doctor

A nasal strip is comfort and airflow, not a treatment for a medical condition. Please see a doctor if any of these sound like you.

See a doctor if

You have loud, persistent snoring along with daytime sleepiness. A partner sees you stop breathing or gasp at night. Or you have ongoing one-sided blockage, pain, or bleeding in your nose. These need a proper check, not a strip.

FAQs

Not always. They reduce snoring that starts in the nose by opening the airway. They do not help throat snoring or sleep apnea.
Yes, for most healthy adults, on clean dry skin. They are drug-free and non-habit-forming. See our guide on using them every night for the full picture.
Yes. The strip opens your nose and the tape keeps your mouth closed, so many people use both together for quieter nights.
Do a small patch test on your inner wrist first. Remove the strip gently with warm water rather than pulling it off dry.
They may give some comfort, but they will not clear congestion from an infection. A strip opens the valve, it does not treat the cold.

Prep clean, place it right, and give it seven nights. The same strip I train and sleep in.
